]]>I think it's good to go for a walk around town because you always notice new things every time. I stopped by the canal in the evening. I think it is best at night when everything is lit up. There was also a boat which offered cruises down the canal.
In the evening we were relaxing and playing with Momo , the hostel cat.
see you tomorrow :)

Yoichi is about a 25 minute train ride from Otaru Station and the distillery is about 5 minutes walk from Yoichi Stations so it's a fairly easy journey. They offer guided tours but you need to book in advance and the tour is in Japanese. The best part about it is the free tasting at the end and there is also a restaurant which I think would be nice to try.
It was a cool place to visit and you can learn more about the whiskey making process. The founder chose Yoichi specifically because it had a similar climate to Scotland where whiskey was being produced originally. Overall it was a great experience so I would definitely recommend it.
see you tomorrow :)

]]>After cleaning I decided to start reading a book. I don't normally read a lot but I have a lot of free time now and there are so many books here, it felt right.
I also sent some postcards to my friends in New Zealand. It was pretty cheap. I believe in Japan it's a flat rate of 100 yen to send postcards anywhere. As winter is coming to an end the weather is getting warmer and a lot of the snow has melted or turned into ice.
In the evening, I went to the supermarket to stock up on some food. Japanese supermarkets have a lot of ready-made meals and usually they are discounted towards the end of the day. So it's good to buy something to have for dinner or the next day.
see you tomorrow :)

I had Dan Dan noodles for breakfast. Even though I love udon, I think it was the first time I had these noodles for breakfast. After I finished cleaning the showers and toilets I was just chilling at the hostel with Hug the hostel dog.
For dinner I went out to a nice Italian restaurant called 'The Coast' with another guest. It was quite a small place and there was just one guy cooking and serving but the food was really good so I definitely recommend it if you want to try something different from Japanese food.
see you tomorrow :)

I went to the supermarket for the last time in Otaru, and I had a great time shopping for a long time, and ended up buying a whole table full of stuff (although a lot of it was snacks).
In the evening, I continued to watch Body 3, which just came out on Netflix yesterday, with potato chips and melon soda.

It's a well known book which talks about how to travel long term. Whenever I tell people about my travels they always tell me how lucky I am and how they wish they could do the same thing. In many ways I am fortunate but I think most of my friends in New Zealand could do the same thing, they just choose not to.
There are many ways to travel cheaply such as volunteering or working abroad. The book also emphasises staying longer in each place and travelling slowly thus seeing more and saving on transport costs.
For lunch I had been craving pasta so I made spaghetti. Often the simple things are the best. In the afternoon I went out for a walk through Otaru Park. It's nice there is a lot of nature all around the city.
see you tomorrow :)
]]>For lunch, I walked to the supermarket and bought a packet of Korean instant noodles to go with the leftover bean sprouts and takoyaki.
Today is my friend's second day in Otaru, I went shopping with them in the afternoon, and ate some delicious Panroru(Pan Roll).
For dinner, we had a yakiniku (BBQ), which I've been wanting to eat since I came to Japan! Japanese yakiniku is really good, and it goes really well with rice.
After dinner, we went to Yunohana, a public bathhouse halfway up the mountain, where the Jacuzzi and sauna were very comfortable, and we were able to watch Shohei Otani play baseball while bathing in the hot spring (one ball was almost a home run, but unfortunately it was caught).
We ended the trip with a beautiful night view of Otaru.
]]>
As a port city, Otaru was an important trading hub for the region and it was also the financial and business centre for Hokkaido. The building is impressive since it's the original Otaru Branch building. All the exhibits are in Japanese so it may be a little hard to understand but there are some Information booklets in English and Chinese. It doesn't take too long to visit and it's Free entry so I would recommend it if you're in the area.
See you tomorrow :)
