Hello again !

New whooper!

JK Hanako from Osaka .

(whooper No.169)

Hello! This is Hanako.
I still haven't finished writing my diary for August last year.
But 1 day left! Only for 1 more day!
Although only for last year…

So, August 30th… The day had finally come.
It was the day my summer vacation ended,
that’s the day I had to leave Morinoki, my home.
I didn't take a very early flight on that day,
so I could enjoy Otaru for almost another day.
In the morning, I had sea urchin and Hakkaku fish
bought by Masa-san the day before for breakfast cooked by Mayumi-san.
Then I’d got power and started mowing hard.
After the last helper work, I enjoyed my last roaming around.
I saw the washbasin (I actually don’t know how to say is correct in English though)
without flowers at Sumiyoshi shrine,
of course my favourite very thin building too.
On the way, I did my food shopping for after my going back to Osaka as usual,
then a happy but also troublesome incident happened.
That's because I bought a whole cabbage (only ¥100!) at Co-op like usual,
the cabbage was cheap but so fresh and pretty heavy like 2.5Kg,
so it’s easily exceeded the 1.5Kg of vacancy in my luggage
that I’d carefully prepared from the previous day
with considering the weight of a cabbage and guessing, "This should be enough.".
It was so hard to reduce 1Kg while fighting against time at the very last moment
I adopted a tactic to quickly pour the tomato cocktail from Seico mart
that I was about to bring home etc. into my stomach, then finally I won that battle.
while my schedule was behind due to the battle with the weight of the cabbage,
I had pasta carbonara with sea urchins cooked by Mayumi-san
and the cake delivered by Nacchan as my early last supper.
Then, it became time to leave.
I feel lonely whenever I leave home.
To tell the truth, I always walk down the way to Minami Otaru station
with almost crying like a samurai who has lost a battle.
However, also as usual, I don’t say goodbye.
See you again next summer!

Hello! Long time no see.
This is Hanako again.
Actually, I still haven’t finished writing my diary for last August yet.
Oh no, the next August has already come…

August 29th ( of last year) was the last day that I could stay in Otaru whole day.
I always end up doing the same thing and of course at that time also,
I tried to do anything I’d wanted to do in Otaru.
First, Masa-san and I went out together for shopping at Nantaru market.
Masa-san bought sea urchin and Hakkaku, fish that look ugly but are delicious, for my last breakfast.
Next, we had lunch at Rokumitei, which is famous for Kimari-don rice bowl
but I enjoyed Yokubari (means greedy) set instead of Kimari-don.
After lunch, I started roaming around by myself
to see what I love in Otaru once again as much as possible.
First, I looked at the houses built along Temiya Line, which are always wonderful and messy.
When it comes to earthquake resistance, there's nothing I can do about it,
but I think the fact that things like that are always there as usual is the leeway of the city.
Next, I visited the exhibition on the railway which had just started on that day.
I was so excited that it’s held for the first time in 2 years,
but I also hoped that it would continue every year as usual in the future.
After that, I visited the pub, “Ishikawa Genzo‘s store”,
that I’d been interested in for a long time.
I grabbed just one glass while enjoying interesting stories of Otaru’s history
told by the friendly and intelligent owner
(but he’s not Ishikawa Genzo though).
Then I thought I was going home in a hurry
however when I passed Yanagawa shopping street,
I remembered that I was going to check
if the fried rice was also not delicious next time at the restaurant “Yamahiko”,
which is famous for its not-so-delicious legend.
I thought I must go because I’d noticed about that,
so I walked to the front of the restaurant fearfully, but I found it’s already closed for that day.
So I said to myself with no emotion, "Oh no, it can't be helped if it's closed."
Then, instead of that, I tried the egg ice cream which I caught my attention at "Naruto", next door.
But… it was so sweet that it made my teeth grind,
and it gave me a shock that cracked my brain.
It was the moment when a new legend was born, even if it wasn't Yamahiko.
I went home while having another ice cream from Seico mart to cleanse my palate.
And then, for my last dinner of that summer, we had sushi gorgeously.
I even got a T-shirt for the 23rd anniversary of Morinoki, which was delivered just in time for my last night.
In this way, it was a day to be stuffed with things I wanted to do,
but I still couldn't help but feel like I had left things unfinished.

Hello! This is Hanako.
I’m in the midst of the midterm exam period for the 2nd semester now.
I haven't even started studying for tomorrow's exam yet,
but I started writing this diary to escape reality.

On August 28th, Morinoki’s emergency declaration was lifted on that day, so Masa-san finally came back to Morinoki.
Because of that, we helpers no longer needed to stay at Morinoki.
And it’s the last day of the day off from Mayumi-san’s part-time job at Nahana.
First, to fulfil my great desire to get a student discount for some food in Otaru,
we went to Otaru Kuraya ramen noodle restaurant for lunch.
Of course, I ordered a student discount ramen and got a large serving for free,
in addition, I also ordered half-priced dumplings
that only those who’d ordered student discount ramen could order.
a high school student who eats a lot was so happy that all of these were cheaper than ¥900 in total.
Mayumi-san also ordered ramen noodles and even a small serving curry and rice,
as if she was tempted by my large order.
The 2 of us stuffed ourselves until our stomachs were full, and we even got ice pops when we left the restaurant,
then went back to Morinoki once with a bit excitement.
And after an interval that Masa-san and I went shopping at Co-op, Mayumi-san and I went out again.
Even though I’d been at Co-op until just a little while ago, I came back to Morinoki once
and then went to Ryoutoku-ji Temple next to Co-op.
I knew for long that there’s a small museum of Nagakura Shimpachi of Shinsengumi,
however I’d felt shy to enter there by myself alone,
and I hadn't been so interested in Shinsengumi, so I always passed by.
But, on that day, I was together with Mayumi-san,
also we both just finished reading "Golden Kamuy"
and were a little curious about Nagakura Shimpachi who appeared in the story,
so we decided to go in because our sloppy feelings matched perfectly.
I could understand very well that this temple’s trying so hard to show how much related Nagakura Shimpachi.
After we achieved our goal, of course we wandered around.
Actually, this was the first and last wandering with Mayumi-san in this summer.
Now I briefly introduce the places we visited:
first, my favourite nook in where Micro Foods and so on are.
As I expected, this place is Mayumi-san's favourite too.
And next was the threatening erosions of trees
that Mayumi-san had been so absorbed in observing that she’d gotten injured in the gutter in front.
It’s a truly amazing sight that I couldn’t take my eyes off of
and it's a total trap to have a gutter with a broken lid at her feet.
Thanks to Mayumi-san's sacrifice, the lid was repaired
so I could observe the threats of nature without falling into traps.
And then, moreover, the post mania’s house that we must not miss.
It’s a house with so many works inspired by mail posts that we may moan from them in our dreams.
The number of works didn't seem to have increased since last summer,
but there'd been already an enormous number of them before,
so I was at a loss for words again no matter how many times I saw them.
And since the house itself had been extended like a DIY carpenter,
so I’m very curious about the developments in future.
It was like a dream day for me
because I could keep Mayumi-san all to myself for almost the whole day like that.
I cannot help looking forward to spending a calm and exciting time with Mayumi-san again next summer.

Hello! This is Hanako.
I bought a new 2nd hand bike.
It’s not a kid (baby goat) so I think it’s ok to name it.

On August 27th,  it’s already only a short time before I left Otaru,
so, it was shorter than usual but I had go-over wandering with following to my desires.
Now I list the main things I saw:
the lovely house in front of the former Otaru Hanazono Hospital, Tsuruya rice cake confectionery,
Hikari hobby shop, the splendid window grilles of Ohara hotel behind of Hikari,
my favourite building of Marumori Co., Ltd., Patalliro House,
the 6th division headquarters of Otaru city fire brigade,
the green house that distracts my sense of balance and its mysterious door,
Muramatsu group’s building of fake bricks
and Irifune underpass with nice murals but a little scary to walk through
On the way, I took a pit stop at Seicomart Irifune branch and bought a bottle of wine
for the last staff meeting under Morinoki’s state of emergency declaration.
And, of course, I also bought Hokkaido sweet bean ice cream which the only ice cream I had that day.
I enjoyed the rest of my wandering while having the ice cream with being careful not to let crows steal it.
In this way, when I simply list my favourite things,
I don’t know the reasons or the contexts, but I can understand that I just like what I like.
In the end, I totally couldn’t understand anything, but it was a good opportunity to reflect on myself.
Thank you so much, my friends, anyway.

Hello! This is Hanako.
I’m writing this diary while having Tsukisap sweet bean cake that Mayumi-san gave me.
I'm in a hurry because the expiration date is October 12th.

On August 26th, I was invited to go out for a little picnic lunch by the nice weather during the daytime,
but in the evening, I stayed at Morinoki and read all the volumes of Golden Kamuy
published since last summer that had been completed a little while ago.
To celebrate the completion of this reading, I‘d bought a Golden Kamuy can of Sapporo Classic beer in advance,
and I really wanted Mayumi-san, who’d already did the same great thing before, to celebrate with me,
so in order to finish reading by 9pm, which was the limit of our staff meeting time, I read at an enormous speed.

I also read them very ascetic and stoic
like I hardened my heart and skipped all the sound effects
such like “boom!” and “hahaha” that I’d normally read as text,
even if I couldn’t understand the story a little,
or minded like "Oh, what volume did Tsukisap sweet bean cake appear?”,
I forbade myself to read the previous volumes again,
and moreover that, I tried not to search for interesting place names, cultures,
historical facts, and so on that appeared in the story.
I tried my best so much harder than studying for exams.
I managed to finish reading just before 9pm finally,
then, although our staff meeting should’ve ended at 9 originally
but thanks to Mayumi-san's kindness,
we could hold the celebration for finishing reading Golden Kamuy
under the name of our staff meeting from 9 to 11.
In order to make my goal of celebrating with Mayumi-san real, I read desperately,
as a result, I could be so happy because I was able to celebrate happily and deliciously.
However, actually I still cannot make myself understand about 70% of the story of Golden Kamuy,
so I’ll have to read all the volumes again next summer.

Hello! This is Hanako.
I’m looking for adopters for the kittens
that were born by the stray cat rescued by my friend whose birthday was yesterday.
It sounds so complicated.
But anyway, please contact me if you are interested in adopting kittens.
I’m sincerely looking forward to your application.

On August 25th, I didn’t go out and protected Morinoki Castle with Queen Momo.
Morinoki usually has 2 cute animals, Momo the cat and Hug the dog.
However,
because Hug had been staying at the Harada residence with Princess Keiko and Masa-san
during the week under Morinoki’s state of emergency declaration,
only Momo had been at Morinoki.
During the week without Masa-san, Momo had been getting grumpy
and often called us helpers even though she had nothing to order us.
Momo knows so well that I’m the most clumsy of the helpers and follow her orders,
so she meowed and called me like “Hanako, come quickly!” so often
especially when I was the only one in the shared space at Morinoki,
then when I went to her, she put her raised head down and started sleeping like a mean queen.
Also, she cried out and demanded me to move with the string tied to her collar taut,
then as soon as I grabbed her string,
she ran out and went into the guest rooms and places she didn't usually go,
after moving for a while and being satisfied,
she seemed to calm down back in her place,
but a few minutes later she repeated calling me again and again.
Momo’d been upset like that without Masa-san,
however even though I felt I was in trouble,
I actually do love Momo's queen-ish attitude.

Hello! This is Hanako.
A lot of pictures I took accumulated, and the storage of my mobile phone became full.
I have to sort out the pictures I took over the past 2 months,
but I hate to do so because I don't like looking back the pictures I took by myself.

On August 24th, I had a massive wandering about as a result.
However, I cannot remember much about the 3 hours on the way.
I could’ve been abducted by aliens.
I only can remember, first, I saw my favourite Hara-san's house,
and about 3 hours later, had a beer at Ayano-san's Otaru Tap Room,
after that, I saw the night view of the can factory and went back home.
But I don't have many memories of wandering between Hara-san's house and OTR.
However, I found a lot of pictures taken during that time, so now I’ll look back on the pictures.
After Hara-san's house, I visited railway overpasses and my favourite houses,
took pictures of buildings as I wanted on the way,
went Jigoku-zaka slope up and got Tomioka Church without knowing why.
I cannot remember much, but I was at Tomioka Church for nearly an hour
and took about 150 pictures.
After that, also I met cats, went to Midori branch of Co-op,
and saw my favourite building with an angel door
(the door’s on the 2nd floor but there’re no stairs to it) across from Co-op.
Then, I observed the details of the former Endou Matabei’s residence carefully
although don’t remember at all.
I even crossed the road to see the Otaru Police Station too.
What bothered me so much?
And next is probably the highlight of this memoryless wandering, Inaho Bridge.
This bridge is an overpass exclusively for pedestrians above the railway,
and it’s said that it’s also the place where Otaru's first snowmelt system was constructed.
I cannot remember much, so I'm just guessing from the pictures,
under the glaring sunshine, which was getting lower,
I seemed to keep watching Inaho Bridge l and over again
while climbing up and down it many times.
Furthermore, after waiting for trains to pass the curve,
I also seemed to fully enjoy pantographs collecting electricity as a pantographer.
Then I also seemed to enjoy looking at my favourite old building
with seeing Central Market sideways.
Because I was alone at that time, I skipped Jazz Cafe FreeLance
which I’ve already decided to go to with Mayumi-san before I asked her,
but turned around the cafe and took pictures.
After that, I finally reached OTR.
My memories from this point on are clear.
I talked with Ayano-san while having nice beer.
And I came up with the thing I had to do, so I went to Temiya.
Then I took a walk by the canal at night,
looked at the can factory, and then went back home.
In those 3 hours I cannot remember well, surprisingly I had 3 ice creams.
So that means 1 per hour.
Was this sleepwalking, daydreaming, or what aliens did? It's totally a mystery.
In this way, the blank 3 hours revealed from the pictures on my mobile phone,
However, perhaps these pictures were also fabricated by aliens,
and I feel that I was actually in the UFO for about 3 hours.
It was Hanako’s strange but ordinary time like that.

Hello! This is Hanako.
I'm already 1 month late in writing my diary.

On August 23rd, I did Morinokeeper (Morinoki’s keeper)
under the state of emergency of Morinoki without going anywhere out.
While Masa-san was quarantining at home,
we helpers somehow managed to run Morinoki,
Among the several tasks, one of the most important was the staff meeting
to hand over the early and the late shifts.
It’s a meeting held between 8 and 9ish p.m.
to be discussed and reflected on the day,
confirmed the schedule for the next day and so on
by Mayumi-san, as the early shift, who wakes up early and cooks breakfast
and I, as the late shift, who stay up until late, lock the door and turn off the lights.
(Nacchan hadn’t joined us because she’d been sick with the next turn of my cold
and she usually goes to bed quite early.)
Hey, now you see how we were working so hard.
Here's the details of how the meeting was:
We’d had Otaru beer provided by Masa-san and cheap wine from Seico Mart,
but considered it's no good to drink them cheerfully
because we’d been in the emergency situation
so we’d poured them into mugs like tea
then called beer "barley tea" and wine "herb tea" under the false names.
And we mainly talked like “What would you like to eat tomorrow?”
or “Hug came out through the slit of the door and she’s super cute as usual
when I visited only until the front door of Masa-san’s home.”
We used to have a little drinking party like this quietly and calmly every single night.
This is one of the very important tasks as Morinokeepers too, isn’t it?
In such a way, we Morinoki's helpers had been carrying out our duties as Morinokeepers.
